Under arbetet med inläggen om Robert E. Howards livssyn och världsbild samlades det ihop ett antal utdrag och excerpter från hans många berättelser och brev. Många av dessa fick inte plats i inläggen, men är intressanta ändå, och återges därför i dagens inlägg.
Medfödda minnen
Howard utnyttjade i sina historier inte sällan den fornnordiska tron på intergenerationell återfödelse, alltså att en person kan återfödas som sin egen ättling (alternativt nedärvda minnen). Detta får en extra dimension när man läser hans beskrivning av hur han följde sina huvudpersoner.
While I don´t go so far as to believe that stories are inspired by actually existent spirits or powers (though I am rather flatly opposed to flatly denying anything) I have sometimes wondered if it were possible that unrecognized forces of the past or present – or even the future – work through the thoughts and actions of living men. This occured to me when I was writing the first stories of the Conan series especially… I still write of Conan more powerfully and with more understanding than any of my other characters. But the time will probably come when I will suddenly find myself unable to write convincingly of him at all. That has happened in the past with nearly all my rather numerous characters; suddenly I would find myself out of contact with the conception, as if the man himself had been standing at my shoulder directing my efforts, and had suddenly turned and gone away..

Etnisk solidaritet
Intressant är även Howards syn på etnisk solidaritet.
”…I can crawl through the line the Picts have thrown around this hill, and return to the fort to report you all slain by the savages… but I’m not going to do that!” Conan roared. ”Not because I have any love for you dogs, but because a white man doesn’t leave white men, even his enemies, to be butchered by Picts.”

And his main weapon is – dope! He has flooded Europe and no doubt America with opium and haschisch… with this he ensnares and enslaves men and women.
Oh, he does not work haphazardly! Before ever the black flood breaks, he will be prepared; if he has his way, the governments of the white races will be honeycombs of corruption – the strongest men of the white races will be dead. The white men’s secrets of war will be his. When it comes, I look for a simultaneous uprising against white supremacy, of all the colored races…

Politiskt ideal
Howards politiska ideal påminner också mycket om det typiskt nordeuropeiska. I ett mer arkaiskt tillstånd är detta det samhälle vi känner igen från vikingatiden, med fria män som har ett stort mått av oberoende och väljer sin ledare i krig. Detta tillstånd har en förmåga att återuppstå så snart nordeuropeiska män befinner sig utanför den starka staten, det må sedan röra sig om nordamerikanska pionjärer eller de karibiska buckanjärer som organiserade sig som Brethren of the Coast och utmanade den spanska övermnakten.
… and presently there grew up the district known as the Free Province of Thandara, because it was not like the other provinces, royal grants to great lords east of the marches and settled by them, but cut out of the wilderness by the pioneers themselves without aid of the Aquilonian nobility. We paid no taxes to any baron. Our governor was not appointed by any lord, but we elected him ourselves, from our own people, and he was responsible only to the king. We manned and built our forts ourselves, and sustained ourselves in war as in peace.

I mer ”civiliserade” tillstånd får detta ideal nya former, men man känner fortfarande igen målsättningen. Tydligast är detta i The Hour of the Dragon, där Conan blivit kung av Aquilonia och flera gånger under skeendet uttrycker sin syn på sin plikt som kung. Främst bland dessa återfinns ett försvar av folkets frihet, men det finns också ett inslag av verklig enhet mellan folk och överhet. Kungar och adel som håller ett alltför stort avstånd till sitt folk, eller rentav säljer folket som slavar, är inget som faller kung Conan och hans närmaste i smaken.
När det gäller en av traditionalismens mer centrala sidor av det politiska idealet, nämligen att en kung ska representera det som är högre än det mänskliga, är detta betydligt mer sällsynt i Howards historier. Man kan ana att kung Conan väljs av guden Mitra till att bli de högre makternas förkämpe i Phoenix on the Sword, men annars är sådana inslag väldigt få.
